CAN YOU VAPE IN DUBAI?

Vaping Regulations in Dubai, UAE

As of 2019, the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) has legalized the sale of e-cigarettes and vaporizers in an effort to address the growing prevalence of smoking in the UAE. This move has been widely welcomed as it offers a safer alternative to traditional smoking by eliminating the risks associated with nicotine consumption. Many smokers in the UK have already successfully quit smoking using e-cigarettes, according to the NHS.

ESMA has also established regulations and standards governing the sale and distribution of e-cigarettes, and manufacturers are required to comply with these regulations. Redha Salman, director of the Health and Safety Department, states that vapes are treated similarly to conventional cigarettes.

As of 2022, vaping is indeed legal in the UAE, provided that individuals adhere to the set standards. Notably, smoking in public places such as cinemas and shopping malls remains strictly prohibited.

ESMA’s new standards encompass various aspects related to e-cigarettes, including nicotine usage, ingredients, labeling, technical specifications, and more. These regulations extend to electronic shishas as well. The introduction of these standards is a response to the rising illegal distribution and sale of e-cigarettes in the UAE.

While e-cigarettes are touted as being 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes, Dr. Hanan Obaid, head of the Dubai Tobacco-Free Initiative at the DHA, emphasizes that it’s best to avoid smoking altogether, as no form of smoking is entirely safe.

For those deciding between smoking and vaping, the choice is personal. However, with a safer alternative that offers a comparable experience, many are opting for vaping. It’s important to note that certain rules apply:

1. You must be 18 or older.
2. Importing e-cigarettes from other countries into the UAE is not allowed.
3. Vaping in public spaces is prohibited.

Regarding foreigners in Dubai:

Foreigners are not prohibited from vaping, but it’s crucial to abide by local regulations. Vaping in public places can lead to serious consequences.

Starting a vape business in Dubai:

Dubai’s vape market holds promise for entrepreneurs, but obtaining the necessary permits and government approvals is essential before launching a vape store.

Vaping inside a car:

While there is no explicit law against vaping inside a car, it’s important to consider the broader context. Vaping in public areas, including vehicles that are accessible to the public, can still result in legal issues.
